Hydroxy Acrylic Monomers for Coatings and Resins

How the four DECHEM monomers fit into a two-component coating or adhesive system, and what each one contributes.

Hydroxy Acrylic Monomers for Coatings and Resins

Most industrial coating and adhesive systems built on hydroxy-functional chemistry follow the same architecture: a reactive component that cures, a hydroxyl component that provides crosslinking sites, and a crosslinking agent that reacts with those sites.

The monomer you choose sits in the second position. It determines how much crosslinking can happen, how fast the system cures, and how the finished film behaves.

2-HEA: reactivity and hardness

With the fastest polymerisation rate of the four, 2-HEA raises crosslinking density efficiently. In UV and EB curing systems it delivers surface hardness, abrasion resistance and adhesion. Choose it where the line speed is high and the film should be hard.

HEMA: durability and hydrolysis resistance

HEMA's methacrylate backbone resists hydrolysis and holds thermal stability well. The cured film is harder and more durable. For exterior applications, automotive coatings and any specification with a water exposure or heat profile, this is the relevant option.

2-HPA: flexibility

The propyl chain in 2-HPA delivers a more flexible cured film and good substrate adhesion. In waterborne systems and coatings over flexible or thermally active substrates, that flexibility is the point.

HPMA: weather resistance with functionality

HPMA combines the methacrylate backbone with hydroxyl functionality, giving good weather resistance in a crosslinkable system.

Working with crosslinkers

All four are used with isocyanate, melamine or other reactive crosslinking systems. The hydroxyl value in the TDS is what determines the crosslinker demand, and the acid value and inhibitor content matter to the formulator working with the material directly. Where precise control is needed, ask for the batch COA to compare against the typical values you are designing with.

Packaging and delivery

All four are supplied in 200 kg HDPE drums, with ISO tanks and bulk containers available. For shipments into India and South Asia, the export documentation and destination port coordination are agreed at the same time as the commercial terms.
